Whittaker Family Page
The oldest Whittaker I have found related to our line is Thomas Whittaker, born about 1655 in Yorkshire, England. I do not have his parents names nor his wife's name.
1 - Thomas Whittaker, born about 1655 in Yorkshire, England, to unknown parents, and married to unknown wife. One child known - Mark Whittaker, born November 1677 in West Yorkshire, England. Date of death - unknown.
2 - Mark Whittaker, born about November 1677 to Thomas Whittaker and unknown mother in Yorkshire, England.
1702 - resident of Baltimore County, Maryland.
1705 - married Catherine Teague (1690-1717) in Baltimore County, Maryland, with children: Elizabeth (1704-1787), Thomas T (1712-1787), Mark (b 1715).
1718 - married Elizabeth Empson (unknown dates), with children: Charity (b. 1718), Empson (b. 1724), Elizabeth (b. 1726), and James (1727-1810).
1729 - died 1 May in Baltimore County, Maryland.
3 - Thomas T Whittaker, born 12 June 1712 in Baltimore County, Maryland.
1729 - at age 17, petitioned the Court as an orphan to be allowed to live with his mother's sister Ann and her husband Thomas Mitchell.
1735 - married ? Unsure about this date based on dates of children's births; this is the date most often listed by others.
1745 - more likely date of marriage to Mary Wilson (1715-1795), with children: Margaret (about 1748-1834), Jane (born about 1750), Elizabeth (born about 1754), Mary (born about 1756), Nancy Ann (about 1758-1820), Mark M (about 1760-1814), and Johnson (Sr) (about 1765-1802)
1787 - died in Surry County, North Carolina.
4 - Johnson Whittaker (Sr), born about 1765 to Thomas T Whittaker and Mary Wilson.
1784 - married Sarah Stafford (born about 1765) in Surry County, North Carolina, with children: Margaret (born about 1789), Johnson (Jr) (born about 1790), and Nancy (born about 1791). They probably had other children also, but I have no information on any other children.
1802 - died in Madison County, Kentucky.
5 - Johnson Whittaker (Jr), born about 1790 to Johnson Whittaker (Sr) and Mary Wilson.
1812 - married Ankey Taylor (born about 1792) on 3 September 1812 in Madison County, Kentucky.
-Johnson (born about 1810), married Mary ("Polly") Land; no further information.
-James Harvey (about 1813-1858), married Sarah Byrum (Sally Barnes?) (about 1815-1870), with children Archibald, James Henry*, Nancy, Sarah, Johnson, Catherine, William, John*, Thomas, Taylor, Stephen, Susan & Edaline. (*James Henry and John Whitaker both served in the Civil War, Union Army, 11th Kentucky Cavalry, Company A along with other Whitaker men.)
-Marcus Aurelius ("Mark") about 1814-1900), married to Mourning Ham - see children below.
-John Jackson (born about 1815), married to Sarah ("Sally") Land (born about 1817), with children Mary Elizabeth, Jane, William Jackson, Lucy, Robert Andrew, James Woodson ("WB"), & Henry C.
-Polly (born about 1820), no further information.
-Margaret (born about 1820), married to William Gully (Gulley?); no further information.
-Irvine (born about 1822), married to Tabitha Jane Moberly (1827-1855) with children Thomas J*, James Milton*, Charles, Clarka/Clarky, Martha, William Dudley, & Perry. Married next to Tempe/Tempy Barnes (born about 1834) with children Abraham L, Nancy A, Emily, Robert, & Mary. *(Thomas J Whitaker served in the Civil War, Union Army, 1st Kentucky Cavalry, Co K. James Milton Whitaker served in the Civil War, Union Army, 11th Kentucky Cavalry.)
-Zachariah (born about 1824), married Susan Turner (born about 1835), with child George W.
-Sarah (born about 1828), no further information.
1840 - last documentation, age 50, in Madison County, Kentucky census.
Date of death - unknown.
6 - Marcus Aurelius (Mark) Whittaker was born about 1814 to Johnson Whittaker (Jr) and Ankey Taylor.
1832 - married Mourning Ham (about 1812-1900) on October 25, in Madison County, Kentucky.
-Sidney* (born about 1833), married Edaline Ivins (1840-1900) with children Ida Belle, Lucy Fanny, Alan, J, Susan, Mollie & Delia. Sidney Whittaker served in the Civil War, Union Army, 11th Kentucky Cavalry, Company A along with his brother John Martin Whittaker and first-cousin James Milton Whittaker (son of Irvine Whittaker and Tabitha Jane Moberly Whittaker).
-Patsy (born about 1834), age 16 in 1850 census; no further information.
-William (born about 1837), married Sally Elkin (b. abt 1848); no further information.
-Thomas (born about 1839), married Annie Elizabeth Roberts (b. abt 1849), with children Jane and Nancy.
-Irvine* (about 1839-1919), married Nancy B Caudle (1846-1922), with children William M ("Willie"), George, Nancy M ("Nannie"), Charlie, Fountain J, & Brutus. Irvine served in Co K, 1st Kentucky Cavalry, Union Army during the Civil War. Family lore says he was working in the fields when approached by soldiers on horses who told him he was enlisting and coming with them. His brother Johnson (born 1843) and their first-cousin Thomas J Whitaker (born 1843, son of Irvine & Tabitha Moberly Whitaker) also served in the same regiment and company.
-John Martin* (born about 1841), married Elizabeth ("Betty") Wilder (1854-1951), with children William M, Sally A, & John ("Johnnie") Marion. John Martin Whittaker served in the Civil War, Union Army, 11th Kentucky Cavalry, Company A.
-Johnson M* ("Duff") (about 1843-1917), married Carrie Elizabeth Collins Teater (1841-1903), with children Josie Fine, James H, Sarah & Ella. (Carrie Elizabeth Collins was first married to Michael Teater with children Cordelia Jane "Cordie" and John William Teater.) Johnson served in the Civil War, Union Army, 1st Kentucky Cavalry, Company K along with his brother Irvine and first-cousin Thomas J. Whitaker (son of Irvine Whitaker & Tabitha Moberly Whitaker).
-Eliza (born about 1844), married to Joseph Haskel Ball (b. abt 1850), with children Hugh, Nancy, John, & Lucy. (Joseph H Ball was first married to Eliza's sister Margaret - see below.)
-Frances Ann ("Fanny") (born Aug 1847 - died 1924), married William Harrison Goins - see children in next section below.
-Margaret (about 1849-1880), married Joseph Haskel Ball (b. abt 1850) with children Arthur and Cordelia as well as two who were stillborn or died as infants (1 male, 1 female). (After Margaret's death, Joseph H Ball married her older sister Eliza - see above.)
-Zachariah (about 1852-1880), age 18 in 1870 census, not listed in 1880 census. Zachariah was said to be what today would be classified as handicapped (perhaps mentally handicapped).
-Marcus Aurelius ("Reel") (about 1855-1920), married Margaret Vandeventer (1858-1936), with children Thomas, Lizzie, Sherman, Ella, Osie, Pattie, Etta, & Shirley Dock.
-George (born about 1856), married Elizabeth ("Lizzie") Thompson; no further information.
1900 - last documentation, age 86, Garrard County, Kentucky census, living in the home of son Irvine and family.
Date of death - unknown.
*Civil War: (2018 UPDATE: It may be that three of the four sons served in the Confederate Army, with only Irvine fighting for the North. I will do more research on this.) Four sons of Marcus Aurelius Whittaker and Mourning Ham served in the Civil War - Sidney and John Martin served in Company A, 11th Kentucky Cavalry, Union Army, and Irvine and Johnson served in Company K, 1st Kentucky Cavalry, Union Army. Two sons of Irvine Whittaker and Tabitha Jane Moberly also served in the Civil War - Thomas J Whittaker served in Company K, 1st Kentucky Cavalry, Union Army and James Milton Whittaker served with the 11th Kentucky Cavalry, Union Army. Two sons of James Harvey Whittaker and Sarah Byrum served in the Civil War - James Henry and John both served in Company A, 11th Kentucky Cavalry, Union Army. (James Harvey Whittaker, Marcus Aurelius Whittaker, and Irvine Whittaker were brothers, all sons of Johnson Whittaker Jr. and Ankey Taylor.)
7 - Frances Ann ("Fanny") Whittaker was born in August 1847 to Marcus Aurelius Whittaker and Mourning Ham.
1864 - married William Harrison Goins (1838-1913) on 27 September, in Madison County, Kentucky.
-Lucy Ellen (1867-1926), married James A Long (1852-1928), with children Florene, Minnie, Lela/Lila, Willie, Lillian, Mary, Richard T, Bessie & Ethel.
-Relus Marcus ("R. Mark") Goins (1869-1955), married Eliza Jane Ball (1867-1951), with children Robert Lee, Martin Louis, William Gobel Arbuckle, James, & Harry Morgan.
-Middleton ("Mid") (1873-1904), never married, died at age 31.
-Cyrus ("Cy") (1874-1881), died at age 7.
-Edaline ("Eddy") ("Dolly") (1876-1958), married Silas M Isaacs (1872-1930), with children Ollie Frances, Collins, & Bergson Owen ("Berg").
-Benjamin Franklin (1878-1978), I have no information on him; death date may be in error and possibly should be 1878 (died in infancy?). Note: his sister Lizzy named one of her sons Benjamin Franklin Tevis.
-Elizabeth ("Lizzy") (1880-1910), married to Robert B Tevis (1870-1920), with children Grace Stone, Benjamin Franklin, Percy Eugene, Robert Walker, & Shirley Hutchenson.
-Georgia Ann or Georgeann ("Georgie") (1888-1908), married Robert Ellis ("Bobbie") Goins. (Per family lore, Georgie killed herself at age 20 after someone filled her head with tales about having a child with birth defects after marrying her first cousin.)
1924 - died in Lincoln County, Kentucky.
